No Cox Charities Cycling Classic in 2009 last updated: 2009-01-14
To Friends of the Cox Charities Cycling Classic,
After our most successful event ever in 2008, and despite continued strong support from Cox Communications, our sponsors, volunteers, the City of Providence, USA Cycling, and the racing community, I have decided that the race will come to an end. I will no longer promote the CCCC.
Thanks to our volunteers, the sponsors, the City of Providence, Cox Communications management and employees, and the racers who have shown such great support of the event, we have grown it each year, culminating in being a part of USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar last year. The race has improved in each of its seven years, and last year’s event was a success from every perspective. The management of Cox Communications has been thrilled with the success of the event and its role in raising awareness of Cox Charities and its mission of supporting the education and development of children. Likewise, the City of Providence, led by Mayor David Cicilline, embraced our event as one of the many major sporting events that help make Providence such a vibrant city. Cox Communications, our sponsors, USA Cycling, and the City of Providence remain strong supporters of the event, and were anticipating its return in 2009. However, managing and promoting such a large scale event is an all-consuming endeavor which requires more of me than I can continue to give, considering my responsibilities as CFO at Cox Communications New England, as well as my family, my own cycling, and other personal interests.
On behalf of myself and my partners in Pavé Productions, Joel Brown and Michael Dameron, I’d like to thank you all once again for your strong support over these past seven years. With your help, we put Rhode Island cycling back on the map with the best professional criterium event in New England. We helped publicize Cox Charities’ mission, we raised over $75,000 for children’s causes, and provided the New England cycling community with an event the quality and scale of which had no equal. It was a great run, and I’m proud to say that our event was run with professionalism and integrity. Thank you for your part in it.
